The intersection of organized religion and the State has been a topic for debate since the founding of the United States. A wide spectrum of views on religion and politics have emerged since Thomas Jefferson's 1802 Wall of Separation letter discussing the Establishment Clause's requirement that the "legislature shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
